About Sarawati Puja

UPC-Japan-Saraswathi

Saraswati, the wife of the creator god Brahma, is the goddess of wisdom, and she is blessed with the attributes of creativity and imagination. She is referred to as the mother of the Vedas and she is honored as the originator of the Sanskrit language and the devanagari script. She is the benefactress of the fine arts, and in particular of music and oratory, and so one of her names is Vagdevi, which means the goddess of speech. The other names of this goddess are Vac, Brahmani, and Savitri. The name Saraswati literally means the the watery person, and it is the name of a river which is supposed to have flowed in north India in ancient times. Saraswati is also the ancient name of a stream in the Punjab, on whose banks at early times solemn sacrifices were offered to the gods. As a river goddess, Saraswati was to the early people of India what the Ganges is today to the devout Hindu. The fact that this river Saraswati is no longer visible now, would mean that either it was a mythical river, or that the river certainly existed but has now disappeared. However, recent excavations by archaeologists in north India suggest that the river did exist, and the discovery of the signs of the river indicate that our entire theory of the Aryan invasion of India might have to be reconsidered. Saraswati is not only the patroness of speech, but the motivator of science and literature. This goddess is regularly worshipped by the student classes of the sub-continent, and her figure mounted upon her favorite peacock and playing a musical instrument, while in her hands she grasps a book and holds out a flower, is found at the entrance of many schools and colleges in India.

UPC-Japan-Rig-veda

The Rig Veda (X, 17~20), after mentioning Saraswati says,

”May the waters purify us with butter, for their goddesses bear away defilement. I come out of them pure and cleansed.”

In another passage, the Rig Veda (VI, 52~56) says:
”You opulent waters command riches, you possesses excellent power and immortality, you are the mistresses of wealth and progeny, may Saraswati bestow this vitality on her worshiper.”
